What This Tool Does
Mafia (also known as Werewolf) is the classic social deduction game: a few players are secretly Mafia, everyone else is the Village, and each side tries to eliminate the other. Traditionally one person has to sit out and play "god" — the narrator who knows every role and guides the group through night and day. This moderator replaces that job. It assigns roles randomly, hands each player a private link that reveals only their own card, then walks the group through every phase: who acts at night, what happened at dawn, how long the day discussion lasts, and who gets voted out. It also detects the win — the Village wins when every Mafia member is gone; the Mafia wins once they match or outnumber the villagers. Everything runs in your browser: no app, no account, nothing stored on a server.
How to Run a Game Over Zoom or FaceTime
- One person opens this page, enters the player count (6–18) and everyone's name, and hits Deal the roles.
- Send each player their own secret role link in a private chat message — the role is encoded inside the link, so nobody else can see it. Everyone taps to reveal their card, then hides it again.
- Keep mics on. When the tool says "Mafia, open your eyes," those players unmute on a private call or point silently on camera while everyone else looks away, and the host taps the chosen victim in the tool.
- Follow the prompts through dawn, discussion, and the vote. The tool announces deaths, runs the timer, counts votes, and declares the winner.
In the same room with no spare phones? Use pass-the-phone mode instead: the device shows each role one at a time, and each player taps, memorizes, and hides their card before handing it on.
The Roles, in Short
- 🔪 Mafia — wakes each night to secretly choose one victim. Wins by matching or outnumbering the villagers.
- 🎩 Godfather (12+ players) — the Mafia boss. Plays like Mafia, but shows up as innocent when the Detective checks them.
- 💊 Doctor — wakes each night to protect one player. If the Mafia targets that player, they survive.
- 🔍 Detective — wakes each night to check one player and learns whether they are Mafia. The tool shows the answer to the host, who relays it privately.
- 🧑🌾 Villagers — no night power, just sharp eyes. They win the game during the day, through discussion and votes.
Tips for First-Time Groups
- Start small. Six to nine players with the suggested setup is the sweet spot for a first game — big groups get chaotic fast.
- Dead players stay silent. They can watch, but no hints, reactions, or "helpful" sighs.
- Accuse with reasons. "You defended Alex too quickly" moves the game forward; random pointing just feeds the Mafia.
- Special roles: claim carefully. A Detective who reveals too early becomes the Mafia's next target.
